The research is still fairly limited but as it develops and unravels, we're noticing that the medical benefits of CBD Oil for humans is also benefiting our canine best friends as well. Canines have a cannabidiol system just like humans do. The majority of CBD oil products created specifically for dogs utilize CBD from hemp, which is similar to marijuana and related but has a far less THC percentage. A survey published in the Journal of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association found that, out of 632 people, 72 percent reported using or having used a hemp product for their dog (and 104 tried it with their cat) and 64 percent felt that it helped their pets. Many of us have pets suffering from cancer, anxiety, chronic pain, arthritis, and seizures and we want to help man's best friend as much as it helps us. CBD Oil with zero to low THC will not get your dog high just like it won't get you high. It will however interact with the dog’s natural endocannabinoid system like it does with ours. CBD Oil has no threatening side effects, so you don't have to worry about producing a life-threatening overdose in either our dog friends or ourselves. This medicine doesn’t damage the liver, kidney or GI tract.
The most common practice for administering medicine to your dog is orally or mixed in with their meals. It can be used in conjunction with their traditional medicines if they're on any. There are very few, if any, drug interactions to worry about when treating your dog with CBD oil.
In regard to correct dosing there is a small bit of disagreement since we don't have any FDA outlined regulations regarding dosing. In general, if you have a 250 mg bottle of CBD Oil you will administer 2-4 drops for every 5-10 pounds the dog weighs. If your dog is 25 pounds, they will consume around 10-12 drops.
If you have a 500 mg bottle of CBD oil, you'll administer 1 drop for every 5 pounds.
If you have a 1000mg bottle of CBD oil, then you'll administer 1 drop for every 10 pounds. If your dog is less than 10 pounds do NOT administer the 1000 mg CBD oil. The dog will not overdose but giving too much can produce lethargy and lowered blood pressure in the dog.
All mammals have a natural endocannabinoid system built into their physical makeup which allows them to treat their ailments with CBD Oil and medical marijuana. That means any of our pets that are warm-blooded, have hair or fur, secrete milk to feed young, and typically give birth to live young can potentially be treated with CBD Oil. This extends to horses, elephants, reindeer, cattle, and pigs.
Unfortunately, this means that CBD oil and medical marijuana products, according to research thus far, aren't shown to be able to assist our non-mammal pets, like reptiles, fish and birds. Research might prove this statement wrong in the future, but for now, we only know of how it can help our warm-blooded mammal buddies. You should consult a licensed veterinarian when prescribing CBD oil to a pet, but generally the same weight and dosage guideline listed above for dogs will apply to other pets as well. If your pet is less than 5 pounds in weight, you’ll want to consider another option or find a way to be able to administer micro dosages that are less than one drop.
